5 Myths About Electrolysis

Multiple Methods for Hair Removal Available in NYC

There are many misconceptions about different methods of hair removal, whether temporary or permanent.  The end goal of all these methods, however, is to remove unwanted hair. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages.  The major downfall to the temporary hair removal such as shaving, tweezing, waxing, or depilatories, are that they only last a few days to a couple of weeks. Electrolysis is the most successful method available for permanent hair removal and has been around for over 125 years. Confusion and misconceptions still remain even after 125 years. The following is a list of myths that exist about electrolysis.

1. Myth.  Electrolysis is an Outdated Process for Hair Removal that No One Uses Anymore

Even though electrolysis has been around for over 125 years, the technology today has become very advanced. It is the only FDA permanent hair removal method that exists. It is considered the gold standard in hair removal. The machines are very efficient, effective, and state-of-the art. Men, women, and adolescents from all over the world enjoy the benefit of electrolysis by permanently ridding unwanted hair.

2. Myth. It is More Expensive than Other Hair Removal Methods

Electrolysis requires a series of treatments due to the hair growth cycle, but is very affordable.  Money is saved because a person does not need life long touch ups, as with temporary methods. Cost varies from person to person depending on the thickness of the hair and the size of the area being treated. A consultation with an electrologist will help determine how many sessions are needed and the cost involved.

3. Myth. Home Electrolysis Devices are just as Effective as Professional Electrolysis

Home kits are not as powerful as professional electrolysis machines, nor are they FDA approved for permanent hair removal. They do not have enough electrical power to kill the hair growth.

4. Myth. Electrolysis Causes Unbearable Pain

Electrolysis does cause some sensation. It can be described as a slight heating sensation or compared to a small bug bite. The new machines provide more comfort and quicker treatments. Some people find that a 15 minute session is the proper amount of time for their comfort level, and others can fall asleep and be treated for over an hour. It is important to discuss with your electrologist your personal comfort level so that he or she can make the proper settings adjustments.

5. Myth. Laser is More Effective Electrolysis

Laser hair removal is only approved for “hair reduction” by the FDA, whereas electrolysis is approved for “permanent” hair removal by the FDA. Also, there are several different hair and skins tones for which laser is not effective. Electrolysis if effective on all hair and skin types because it targets the growth supply of the hair. Laser only targets the pigment in the hair and is therefore only considered hair reduction.
